Here at Pop up gazebo.com and LP Tent motorsport are happy to announce that we will be competing in the Super 1 karting championships this year with our lead driver competing in BMB Kart Grand Prix.
After several exceptional years in Junior Blue where Stephen lifted both the coveted British no1 and O plates in the same year and the no5 plate in his first year in seniors, LPT motorsport now believes he is ready to take on the top drivers Britain in S1.
Recent tests on a very “green” Larkhall track showed Stephen on a very competitive 38.0second lap time – he said, “ This engine is great – it just keeps pushing on and you never seem to run out of revs.”
The new class has some high level supporters and with now 30 drivers booked for the championship looks like it could provide some of the best racing this year. With several already chosing to race from our pop up gazebos.
Here is what Karting ace Justin Edgar has to say -
The subject of Karting is part of the Edgar’s family tree, so when you ask one of them what they think it’s always interesting to listen to a family that has been in karting for more than 50 years. Justin Edgar has registered for KGP Masters for the 2011 season. After trying out KGP in the support race at the PF S1 at the end of October Edgar now has the taste for KGP – We asked him why?
“As you know I have raced for many years in S1in 100 National and 100cc ICA. I won the Super One 4 times, GP plate 2 times and the O plates 3 times. The rules changed in 2008 and 100cc was finished. I drove the new KF engine and immediately my passion for karting was gone. It didn’t drive like a 100cc and had a thing called a power valve! Very quickly I realised that my karting career was coming to an end. In fact we famously had an Edgar karting clear out at Kart mania – it was a sad day. We were finished with karting or so I thought.
The whole family loves karting but there was no longer anything in karting that I wanted to race. Rotax Max didn’t appeal to me at the time so I went back to Motocross. But I missed karting, competing, the tracks and the people.  So last year I had a go at Rotax 177 and had some great races with Lucas Orrock, Steve Cobb and Dave Griffiths.  When you (Andy Cox) started to say to me that you had an engine that I would Love to drive I was sceptical to say the least!
But I wasn’t to be disappointed. As I drove out the pits at PF I instantly knew I was back driving a kart engine as close to the 100cc engines of before except the BMB was so powerful, uncomplicated and sounded fantastic – it was proper!
I want (and have registered) to race KGP Masters in S1 this year and I hope others will too. The engine and the KGP class rules look to provide a good competitive package without having to do major testing or major investment on the engine.
The Vega KGP tyres are over a second faster than the SL6’s I used in Rotax in 2010 and the grip and drive and braking is easy. The other thing I like is the KGP Masters class weight at 172kgs. I have always famously struggled to get close to any class weight but the kart with the BMB engine weighs only 75kgs which means I easily make the weight in fact it’s a bit close!  It’s also good that KGP Masters allows drivers 30 years or older to waive the min driver weight of 85kgs as long as they ballast up to 172kgs.
I’m looking forward to the new season in Formula KGP Masters and will continue my battles with Steve Cobb. In my opinion if you love proper karting you will love KGP” says Justin Edgar.
